Here’s a concept everybody has thought of at some point:
- How is it that some business owners or employees always give 110% & never get ahead?
- How is it that others, make it look easy & are surrounded by success in whatever they undertake?
My answer is “energy”. Good energy ultimately breeds success. Bad energy eventually results in failure. Both require time & effort.
Good energy is not a product of how smart you are or how hard you try but more a measure of how relevant your actions are to the attainment of your goal(s).
Bad energy is the direct opposite. It is making use of your time & effort to pursue something that has nothing to do with the attainment of your goal(s).
Everybody wants to win & no two interpretations of “winning” are alike. Whether on paper or in our minds, we tend to set goals & then go about spending energy in order to achieve them.
My belief is that those that are most successful have a keen ability to line up everything that they have to do & instinctively distinguish which action to devote energy to 1st, next & last. This prioritization will make use of the good energy 1st & use the bad for what is left.
Ego, spite & anger are the biggest drivers of bad energy in business. Bravado often leads us off on a tangent at the expense of devoting that time & energy to the original goal(s), which coincidently is what we originally determined to be “winning”.
How often have we seen someone cut their price in the face of competition to a level where no profit can be made in order to “win”? If your competitor boards a merchant from which no money can be made, who won, you or them?
How often do we see a sales person chase down an account for months that they know will result in a small payout? As a sales person are you measured by how hard you chase or how much you deliver?
How often do we see someone pursue legal action against another to solve a dispute for which the outcome will result in no tangible gain but the reassurance of a principle? Given the time, effort & expense involved in a lawsuit I have to believe that a better way to make a point is by channeling that energy towards achieving your original goal sooner.
Good Energy is not a hierarchical right within an organization but is almost always found at the top of those that are most successful. It is contagious & attracts others that are like minded. The opposite is true as well & bad energy can spread like a virus. It is always challenging when good people within the organization channel bad energy. I cannot tell you how many talented sales people we have let go over the years because they devoted parts of their day to counting our money instead of their own.
Within a given day we naturally spend time exerting both energies. At the end of a full day, sit down, recount your actions & list which of them impacted the attainment of your goal(s). I think you’ll be surprised.
